Obi-Wan found his master meditating in the Temple gardens. The tree Qui-Gon was sitting under was huge, casting the entire area in an inviting shadow. Despite the climate controlled conditions in the gardens, the sun beating down through the dome above made the area quite warm at times.
Without a word, Obi-Wan sat down next to his master, waiting patiently for him to finish. Moments later, Qui-Gon opened his eyes. "Padawan," he said as he relaxed against the tree. "Is something the matter?"
"Why do you ask?" Obi-Wan replied, studing his fingers.
"You don't normally track me down. And you seem troubled."
"I'm sorry, Master, I shall have to work on my shielding."
Qui-Gon shook his head. "It's not anything I can sense from your emotions. It's your outward appearance."
"I see." He would have to remember to cultivate a more bland countenance in the future, if he was that easy to read.
"Relax, Padawan. Only one who knows you well would notice." The smile Qui-Gon bestowed on him was gentle and encouraging. "Are you ready to talk about what is troubling you?"
Obi-Wan took a deep breath, drawing on the serenity of his surroundings. Eyes firmly fixed on a single blade of grass at the feet of his master, he began to speak. "For several months now, I've been aware of a growing problem with...with my own emotions."
He paused, expecting Qui-Gon to break in, but the older man said nothing, he just waited. Finally he realized he would have to say the words. "I...I seem to have developed feelings for you...feelings that are not a normal part of the master/apprentice bond."
A smile crept across Obi-Wan's face. "Surely you must have noticed something." His master's face remained calm, but blank, giving nothing away. "Very well. I want more from you than a padawan should want from his master. I want...I'm in love with you."
The blank look on Qui-Gon's face vanished, replaced by surprise. "Well...this is unexpected."
"You really had no idea?" Qui-Gon shook his head. "Then I suppose the question is...now that you know, what is your response?"
